I live in the United States and, internationally, had only ever visited Canada until I was 24. That was the age when my world changed. I’m from a large family and exotic family vacations were not in the cards.
The first time out of my comfort zone
When I was 24, I had the chance to do some ethnography fieldwork in Guatemala. I saw how much it cost, and was determined to work hard (as always!) and save money every paycheck so I could afford to go. It was the first time I was ever out of my comfort zone and in a place where I couldn’t blend in. Once I got used to being uncomfortable, I truly became free and became the most authentic version of myself. No more pretenses.
My husband and I try to travel internationally once a year. I was doing well until I became pregnant and had to save my vacation hours for maternity leave (I hope the US catches up to the rest of the world with this). This past summer, we got to visit Greece, so I’m back, baby!
Maps
As any good traveler, I love maps. This lovely map was made using AmCharts visited countries map. So far, I’ve only been to 10% of the countries of the world, but I’m working on seeing more!
