The Arch of the Sergii

Built in 29-27 BC originally at the entrance/exit at a city gate, as the name suggests, the Arch of the Sergii was erected in honor of the three Sergii brothers, but specifically, Lucius Sergius Lepidus.  Lucius Sergius Lepidus had served as the tribune, the Roman legionary officer, in the 29th Legion and was victorious at the Battle of Actium.  The Battle of Actium was the major naval battle between Octavian against Mark Antony and Cleopatra, which allowed Octavian to consolidate his power.  This triumphal arch was a personal memorial that was funded from the private funds of Salvia Postuma who had married into the Sergii family.

The Sergii family was very powerful for a substantial amount of time during the time of ancient Roman.  At that time, the it was a Roman colony with the official name of Colonia Pietas Iulia Pola Pollentia Herculanea.  Many of the Sergii family members served as officials within the colony.

The arch was built during the reign of Augustus and features the late Hellenistic art style.  It features Corinthian columns and winged victories.  It has a low relief frieze of a war chariot and a relief with cupids and garland.  The western side of the gate is more decorated than the eastern side, as the eastern side was originally blocked by the original Naval gate to the city.  There used to be statues in the likeness of Lucius’s father and uncle adorned along the very top of the arch.
