Nothing can quite prepare you for the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood. Located in Saint Petersburg, Russia, this church looks like it came straight out of a fairy tale. Topped with brightly colored domes that are lit up at night, this magnificent architectural beauty exceeds expectations.
Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood
Built between 1883 and 1907, this church was built on top of the location where the Emperor Alexander II was assassinated in 1881. This church was constructed as a memorial. Instead of following the architectural styles of its day, this church exhibits the typical onion domes that you see in medieval Russian architecture. It closely resembles Saint Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow which was built in the mid-500s.
I highly recommend strolling by this architectural gem at night. The magical lights reflect off the canal and make you feel like you’re in one of Alexander Afanasyev’s Russian Fairy Tales.
Inside the Church
Inside of the Church of the Savior of Spilled Blood, you will find a huge number of gorgeous mosaics depicting saints and scenes from the Bible. There is a small fee to enter the church. A wonderful gift shop that is reasonably priced is located inside the church. Here you can buy icons, post cards, and other souvenirs.
Be Careful
There is nothing really to note here about safety. I felt completely safe this entire trip, but especially in Saint Petersburg. Like any other city, just be aware of your surroundings and you will be just fine.
Where is it Located?
The Church of the Savior of Spilled Blood is located along the Griboedov Canal in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The road it is on is called Griboedov Canal Embankment and the church is sandwiched between that and the Mikhailovsky Garden in a very walkable area of the city.
