Utah’s Epic Goosenecks State Park

We planned our trip through Utah by stopping at all the “little green” areas that we saw on Google maps while we made our way from Canyonlands National Park down to the Grand Canyon.  We pulled up to a small state park off of Utah Route 316 looking for a place to camp, not really knowing what was before us. Serendipity brought us to one of the most breathtaking views I have ever seen in my life; the mighty San Juan River at Goosenecks State Park.

Goosenecks State Park

Goosenecks State Park is a park that overlooks south over a several tight meanders (or goosenecks) that have been carved over thousands of years by the San Juan River. The meanders carved valleys which are more akin to canyons into the stone walls.  There is an approximate 1,000 foot drop from the top of the walls down to the water below.

The rock exposed by the San Juan goes back some 300 million years of time.  Six miles of the river snake through a mile and a half of land, providing viewers with an oxbow upon an oxbow upon an oxbow.

Looking at 300 million years of geology is quite humbling. We are just a blip in earth’s deep history.

The park is just a vista at the awesome meander and San Juan River below.  There is no direct access to the San Juan River from the park and no hiking trails either. Camping at the park is allowed and there are toilets on site.  Spending a night here is a great idea, especially if you’re into astronomy and want a wide, clear view of the night sky in all its glory.  Light pollution in this area of Utah is really minimal and allows viewers to see deep into the sky at stars that are usually hidden.  The sunset is also something that should not be missed.
