A Visit to the Great Flats Nature Trail in Late Summer

My recent exploration of the Plotter Kill Preserve and Indian Kill Nature Preserve in Schenectady, New York led me to the small, quiet, and very peaceful Great Flats Nature Trail.  Walking paths and boardwalks loop visitors throughout a protected wetland habitat, providing close access to flaura and fauna usually reserved for those lucky enough to be venturing in rain or “muck” boots.

Great Flats Nature Trail

The Great Flats Nature Trail is a protected wetland habitat that is maintained by the Town of Rotterdam and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).  It became protected in the 1960s when construction plans for the Rotterdam Square Mall threatened the native habitat.  It was at that time that it was put under the protection of the DEC and was to be maintained as a wildlife sanctuary with nature trails so that the public could still enjoy it.

The Great Flats are located along the Mohawk River.  Historically, with the seasonal flooding of the land from the river, this area was very fertile.  The earliest settlers used it as farmland, finding the alluvial soils perfect for growing crops.  During the late 19th century, this land was used as an aquifer for drinking water, and is still used for that purpose today.

Hiking Trails

There are about 4 miles of hiking trails at the Great Flats Nature Trail.  Visitors can take the short loop or long loop that takes you through the wetlands and back to the trail head.  The majority of the trail is mowed grass which is nicely maintained.  The trails through the wetlands take you over boardwalks.  Some appear newer but most of them are older, so do be careful crossing along!
